Is there a “Direct” Bus from Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang?

No. There is no single vehicle that picks you up in Chiang Rai and drops you in Luang Prabang.
When travel agents in Chiang Rai sell you a “Direct Bus” ticket (Usually priced between 950 – 12,200 THB) They are ctually selling you a package that includes:

  • A minivan or local bus from Chiang Rait o the Thai border (Chiang Khong)
  • Assistancfe or instructions for the border crossing
  • A ticket for Laos sleeper bus from Huay Xai on the other side

You can buy this package for peace of mind, or you can easily DIY the journey for slightly less money (about 700 – 900 THB total) by paying for each leg individually.

Step 1: Chiang Rai to the Border (Chiang Khong)

  • Frequency: Every hour (around 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM)
  • Cost: ~65 – 70 THB

  • Tip: Tell the driver you are going to the Laos Border. They will drop you at a specific intersection about 3km from the border control. Where the tuk-tuks wait to shuttle travelers to the immigration checkpoint (50 THB fee)

Step 2: Crossing the Border

  • Thai Exit: Stamp out of Thailand at Chiang Khong immigration.
  • Bridge Crossing: You must buy a ticket for the shuttle bus that crosses the Friendship Bridge (approx. 20–25 THB). You cannot walk across.
