Laos Travel Visa Requirements for out of country travelers

Laos Travel Visa

Everything you need to know to enter the Land of a Million Elephants.

Planning a trip to Laos? The good news is that getting in is easier than ever. Whether you are backpacking overland or flying into Luang Prabang, here is the quick breakdown of how to get your visa so you can start enjoying the sticky rice and sunsets sooner.

1. Do You Need a Visa? (Visa Exemption)

Before you apply, check if you are one of the lucky ones! Travelers from ASEAN countries (Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, etc.) and a few others can enter Visa-Free.[1]

  • 14–15 Days Free: Japan, Switzerland, Luxembourg.
  • 30 Days Free: Russia, South Korea, Mongolia, and most ASEAN nations.

Not on the list? Don’t worry—getting a visa is simple.

2. Option A: Visa On Arrival (The Most Popular)

Perfect for spontaneous travelers. You can get your visa the moment you land at major airports (Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Pakse) or cross most Friendship Bridges.

  • Validity: 30 Days.
  • Cost: $30 – $40 USD (depending on your nationality).
  • Must-Have: You must pay in cash.
  • Pro Tip: Bring crisp, new US Dollar bills. Officials often reject old, torn, or marked banknotes.

3. Option B: The E-Visa (The “Skip the Line” Choice)

If you like peace of mind, apply online before you fly.

  • Where to Apply: Official Lao E-Visa Website CLICK HERE
  • Processing Time: Usually 3 business day
  • Cost: Approx. $50 USD (paid online via credit card).
  • Note: The E-Visa is accepted at major international ports (airports and main bridges) but not every single remote border crossing. Check your entry point first

NEW Laos Travel Visa for Late 2025

As of late 2025, Laos has introduced a Digital Arrival/Departure Card to replace the old paper forms.

  • You should fill this out online or via the official app within 3 days of your arrival.
  • Once completed, you will get a QR code—save this on your phone to show immigration.

The “Must-Have” Checklist

No matter which visa you choose, ensure you have these three things in your bag:

  1. Passport: Must have at least 6 months validity remaining and 1–2 blank pages.
  2. Passport Photos: Bring 2 recent physical photos (4×6 cm) just in case, especially for Visa on Arrival.
  3. Cash: US Dollars are king at the border. Thai Baht is often accepted but at a worse exchange rate.
